History of "kiss and make up"

The informal idiom "kiss and make up" is widely used to refer to forgiveness between friends or lovers after a conflict or quarrel. The first known appearance of this idiom in print dates back to year 1826. It first appreared on page 313 of The United States Literary Gazette - Volume 3:


"Kiss and make up" first climbed in popularity in 1859, and surged significantly further in popularity starting in 1999.

has been used as the title of numerous songs, such as this one, is frequently used in lyrics, as well as many appearances in literature, television, and movies. It was the title of a 1921 short comedy silent film, and the subject and name of this 2008 photograph.
